I am Kurt Rankin.
I am an economist by trade, a strategy analyst by inclination, and a lifelong learner at heart. My professional journey has balanced technical expertise, public engagement, and a global perspective—all grounded in a commitment to helping people and organizations achieve their goals. I have built my 26-year career on a foundation of understanding information in context and translating it into better decisions.
Market behavior, organizational priorities and human judgment do not operate in isolation. I seek to discover the relationships among them. Where do interdependencies exist? How does change propagate throughout a system? How does quantitative evidence combine with informed judgment to evaluate risk, opportunity and likely outcomes?
My answers have always been rooted in systems thinking.
That perspective has shaped my work as an economist. Through econometric modeling and data analysis, I have developed a deep understanding of macroeconomic forces, industry cycles, and consumer behavior. I build models that uncover hidden patterns and predictive signals, and I bring those insights to life through clear, engaging public presentations and stakeholder briefings. For me, the value of data lies in how its distillation empowers others to act.
I am particularly drawn to analytical work that crosses organizational boundaries. Effective decision-making requires more than producing a technically correct answer. It requires creating a process through which different perspectives can be incorporated, assumptions can be challenged, and conclusions can be revised without sacrificing methodological discipline. The analytical frameworks that I design create a common evidence base for discussion, allowing expertise and stakeholder judgment to drive informed, transparent and documented outcomes.
Communication has always been integral to my professional life. I have presented economic analysis to executives, clients, professional audiences and community groups, as well as through television, radio and print media. I have also taught Business Statistics as an adjunct instructor, extending a career spent informing audiences into the different responsibility of formally educating students. Whether I am speaking to quantitative specialists or to a group encountering a concept for the first time, my approach of leading with context and facilitating reasoned decisions remains constant.
My academic background includes a Bachelor of Science in Economics, a Master of Science in Economics & Finance, and an MBA in Global Management. I have also earned certifications in Machine Learning from Stanford University and Time Series Forecasting through the National Association for Business Economics. These foundations have helped shape my technically grounded and strategically oriented perspective on business operations.
Learning, however, has never been confined to subjects directly required by my profession.
I study programming languages and techniques because I want to understand how ideas become functioning systems. My professional work has included extensive use of Microsoft Excel, VBA, EViews and FAME, while my independent work employs Python. I have explored blockchain architecture through Solidity smart-contract development and deployment, and I have continued my personal study of machine learning by working through the first principles of neural networks and large language models rather than treating them solely as finished tools.
Outside of my career-oriented responsibilities, language learning serves as both a personal passion and a form of cognitive discipline. I am currently engaged in sustained study of Gàidhlig (Scottish Gaelic) and have previously immersed myself in the study of Norwegian, Turkish, Italian and Spanish. Whether through language, data or economic signals, I am drawn to the challenge of deciphering meaning and connection from the mickle of information available.
As I continue exploring the intersections of communication, analytics and emerging technologies, I remain focused on understanding complex systems in context, finding useful meaning in the relationships among their parts, and helping people and businesses make informed, confident decisions —one model, one insight, and one innovation at a time.
